Shower Trim and Rough-In Valve Compatibility: What Fits What?
Matching the brand is only a starting point. The visible trim must match the exact rough-in valve, the concealed valve body behind the wall, along with the correct cartridge version, control function, water-outlet arrangement, model variant, installed depth, connected parts, and field condition.

The short answer
Does a matching brand mean the trim will fit?
Not necessarily. Decorative trim is only the visible end of a concealed system, so brand and appearance alone cannot establish compatibility. Identify the exact rough-in valve and cartridge, then verify the control function, outlets, installed depth, condition, and surrounding construction before ordering.

Temperature and volume control are different from a diverter that routes water among independently piped outlets.

Start with the concealed risks
All ten checks matter. As a practical first pass, give these frequent high-cost risks early attention:
- Positively identify the manufacturer, rough model and generation, cartridge, stem, and attachment system.
- Check installed depth against the current manufacturer’s limits and any approved extension path.
- Have a licensed plumber review the valve body and cartridge condition.
- For a multi-outlet shower, also confirm the exact diverter or transfer-valve configuration and outlet count.
This is a qualitative planning priority, not a statistical ranking or compatibility guarantee.
What can change the answer?
Exact identity, cartridge version, control function, outlet arrangement, depth, plate attachment, nearby clearances, retained components, finish availability, and valve condition can each change whether a trim-only update remains viable. Use the full ten-check worksheet below to capture the evidence.

Platform boundaries
What can a current MultiChoice rough support?
Use this section to understand what Delta’s current platform supports, not to identify an unknown installed valve. Delta’s current MultiChoice overview distinguishes 13/14, 17, and 17T control families. A genuine, serviceable current R10000 body can support those families when the correct trim and cartridge are used and the installation conditions are satisfied.
13/14: pressure-balance control
Single-function pressure balance. The selected trim and matching cartridge still control the result.
17: separate volume and temperature control
Dual-function pressure balance. Volume and temperature are controlled separately; this is not outlet diversion.
17T: thermostatic control
Dual-function thermostatic. Do not describe a 17 Series pressure-balance trim as thermostatic.
The platform does not erase field conditions
- It does not create missing outlet piping or add a diverter rough.
- It does not change one rough suffix or connection configuration into another.
- It does not repair a damaged, corroded, unsupported, inaccessible, or incorrectly installed body.
- It does not prove that the current finished-wall depth works with the proposed trim.
- Front-service language does not guarantee that wall access will never be needed.
- It does not make another manufacturer’s trim compatible.
Generation check
Why the cartridge generation matters
Delta’s current tub and shower cartridge service page and 17 Series installation guide (PDF) document multiple cartridge families. The sources use different legacy transition descriptions, so neither valve age nor exterior trim is a conclusive shortcut.
Document the part in front of you
The service sources distinguish RP19804 for a pre-MultiChoice 1300/1400 family, RP46074 for current MultiChoice 13/14, RP46463 for MultiChoice 17, RP47201 for MultiChoice 17T, and an older 1700 cartridge called RP32104. Use the actual cartridge, rough markings, current parts diagram, and manufacturer confirmation. Do not install from this summary.
Appropriate trim removal, cartridge identification, testing, repair, and installation should be handled by an appropriately licensed plumber where required. A photograph of the actual cartridge, stem, screw layout, and visible markings gives the manufacturer or trade something specific to review.
Outlet control
How is mixing trim different from a diverter?
First define what the controls must do and how many independently piped outlets are intended. A showerhead or handshower feature does not identify the concealed rough or piping behind the wall.
Standard mixing rough: R10000
R10000 controls mixed water through a compatible valve trim. The exact T17264-SS-I is shower-only, not a tub/shower or integrated-diverter trim.
Separate diverter rough: R11000
Delta identifies this as a separate diverter rough. It does not replace the mixing rough, and it needs its own exact matching trim and outlet plan.
Integrated mixing and diverter rough: R22000
Delta identifies this as an integrated mixing and diverter rough family. The desired outlets, exact trim, cartridge, piping, and installation still have to match.

What does one verified Delta pairing prove?
This example shows how to match exact current manufacturer documents. Delta currently documents the exact T17264-SS-I trim for the R10000 Series, and the current R10000-UN rough page identifies the rough as a valve body. It is not a promise about an unknown installed valve.

- Ashlyn Stainless shower-only trim.
- Monitor 17 Series dual-function pressure balance: separate volume and temperature control, not thermostatic control or outlet diversion.
- The current Ashlyn specification (PDF) identifies the R10000 Series and a manufacturer-listed 17 Series extension kit path.
- The current parts diagram (PDF) identifies
RP46463for this exact trim. That part identity must not be generalized to every older 1700 valve.
Concealed body: R10000-UN
- The bare rough body is not a complete operating package. Delta states that the selected compatible trim supplies its cartridge.
- The current R10000 specification (PDF) defines
UNas 1/2-inch male National Pipe Taper (NPT) thread with 1/2-inch female copper water tube (CWT)/sweat connections. - Stops, cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), iron-pipe (IP), high-flow shower-only, and thin-wall variants have distinct suffixes. Record the installed suffix instead of inferring it from visible trim.
- Use the exact rough-body installation guide (PDF) for finished-wall and port conditions. Sealing an unused outlet is licensed-plumber work under that guide and applicable code.
What this example still cannot prove
The pairing assumes genuine and serviceable products, the correct rough generation and suffix, compatible outlets and piping, correct installation, an acceptable finished-wall depth, and usable surrounding construction. It does not establish the identity or condition of any valve hidden in a wall.

Stop when unknown or inconsistent: do not assume stops, PEX, threaded, high-flow, or thin-wall geometry.
6. Do depth, plate coverage, handle sweep, and components work?
Continue when confirmed: attach measurements and the manufacturer-approved extension path, if one is allowed.
Stop when unknown or inconsistent: resolve tile coverage, collisions, mounting, and proprietary connections before release.
7. Is the existing valve body rigid, dry, and serviceable?
Continue when confirmed: record the licensed plumber’s observations about support, operation, moisture, condition, and any required service.
Stop: actual movement of the in-wall valve body after appropriate trim removal, active leakage or moisture, or wet or soft substrate ends the trim-only assumption. Distinguish body movement from loose trim, and do not force components.
Why: staining or significant corrosion pauses cosmetic work pending investigation, but it does not by itself prove an active leak or the need to open the wall.
Next: obtain a licensed-plumber evaluation. Wall access may be required, but the project team should determine the least destructive practical approach.
8. Do current manufacturer documents and professional review support proceeding?
Continue when confirmed: the evidence is ready for project-specific professional review.
Stop when unknown or inconsistent: revise the trim, rough, outlet scope, access plan, or repair scope. This sequence never guarantees compatibility.
Safety and scope boundary
What does compatibility not approve?
Limit-stop setup
Delta’s 17 Series installation guide (PDF) requires rotational-limit-stop adjustment and warns that seasonal inlet-temperature changes can require readjustment. Pressure balance does not eliminate every burn risk. Setup and testing belong with the licensed plumber.
2024 model-code context
The 2024 International Residential Code, Section P2708.4, contains automatic-compensating-valve and maximum-setting requirements for covered shower and tub/shower installations. It is a model code, not automatically local law. Verify the adopted edition, amendments, installed flow rating, manufacturer instructions, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). The ICC adoption resource explains that jurisdictions adopt and may amend model codes.
WaterSense context
Delta identifies the exact trim’s showerhead at 1.75 gallons per minute and WaterSense labeled. The EPA showerhead resource says labeled showerheads use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute and are independently certified. WaterSense is a voluntary program, not code approval or whole-room compliance.
Dated verification
What should you recheck before ordering?
On July 15, 2026, the exact T17264-SS-I and R10000-UN had active Delta catalog pages and were not marked discontinued. Delta’s direct store showed the selected configurations out of stock. That is a dated, channel-specific observation, not a claim about global availability or future stock.
Before release or ordering
- Open the current product page and every linked specification, parts diagram, and installation guide.
- Confirm model, suffix, document number, revision, finish, extension path, and current catalog status.
- Separate manufacturer catalog status from seller stock and lead time.
- Route project-specific plumbing, safety, and code decisions to the licensed plumber and AHJ.
Coordinate the work in three phases
The designer coordinates the visible decisions, while the plumber verifies concealed conditions before the supplier prepares the order.
- Define the scope and gather evidence. The designer establishes appearance, finish, functions, and whether the proposal is genuinely trim-only. The plumber field-verifies the valve body, cartridge, stem, depth, diverter arrangement, operation, support, and condition.
- Cross-reference the system and confirm buildability. The supplier uses the field evidence to prepare a complete compatible model-number schedule. The installer or general contractor confirms access, sequence, labor assumptions, concealed-condition responsibility, and affected finishes. Framing reviews support, blocking, wall access, grab bars, slide bars, or mounted components only when affected. The countertop or stone fabricator reviews curbs, bench caps, ledges, deck-mounted components, or slab interfaces only when affected. The tile installer confirms finished-wall thickness, opening size, plate coverage, penetrations, waterproofing implications, and replacement limits.
- Review before ordering. The designer completes the final coordinated review of exact products, finish, dimensions, and visible relationships. The homeowner reviews appearance, price, documented risk allowances, and the proposed order.
This is an adaptable coordination workflow, not a universal contractual hierarchy. Framing and stone review may not apply. Homeowner authorization starts ordering; it is not plumbing, waterproofing, code, manufacturer, or installation approval.
